Security guard critically injured in Irene shooting

The security officer in his 30s was shot in the face and sustained serious injuries.

A security officer was critically injured in a shooting at an agricultural research facility in Irene, Centurion on Thursday evening.

According to a statement by the community emergency response team (Cert), the incident occurred at 23:53.

“A security officer in his 30s was shot in the face and sustained serious injuries. The assailants were allegedly waiting outside the security guard room and shot him as he exited for his hourly patrol at the premises,” the statement read.

Cert medical personnel worked to stabilise him then Netcare 911 emergency helicopter airlifted him to a top trauma facility in the area in a critical yet stable condition.

Cert thanked the various emergency response organisations that assisted at the scene, including Monitor Net, SRU strategic response rescue unit, Tracker, Lyttleton police, Safe City Projects, Prime Africa Security, Emer-G-Med, and Netcare911 Hems.

Police are investigating the shooting.
