Man in light vehicle dies in tragic N1 collision with truck

Emergency services had to use the jaws of life to extract the victim's body from his car.

A man lost his life in a fatal accident on the N1 south before the flying saucer interchange in Centurion on the morning of Tuesday, April 16.

Tshwane Emergency Services (EMS) confirmed the driver died when his light vehicle drove into the back of a truck.

Spokesperson deputy chief Charles Mabaso said: “There’s only [one] fatality that was recorded on the scene”.

Mabaso said EMS had to use the jaws of life to free the victim from the wreckage of his car.

“He was still trapped inside the vehicle when the emergency services arrived on the scene.”

He said the recovery and extrication was complicated.

At the time of writing, Mabaso said EMS was still on the scene, awaiting the arrival of police crash investigators and forensic pathologists.

He said there was no hazard or spillage on the road.

“Currently, two right lanes of the highway as well as the emergency lane have been affected [closed].”

Mabaso advised motorists to drive with caution or use alternative routes.

“[Take] any exit before Rigel to avoid long delays,” said Mabaso

“Police and other law agencies will be responsible for resolving the road closures,” he said.

The Tshwane metro police had not yet commented at time of publishing.
