Audience taken on a journey through the life of Van Gogh

Daniel Anderson brought to life the troubled artist in Vincent, a matchbox musical, at the Centurion Theatre.

Award-winning international pocket musical Vincent – His quest to love and be loved, received a standing ovation at Centurion theatre recently.

Daniel Anderson’s expert performance is paired with Paul Ferreira on piano, on this musical written by Amanda Bothma fusing various pop, rock, jazz and popular musical theatre tunes with the story of Vincent Van Gogh.

Anderson switches between narrative voice and Van Gogh himself, unravelling the story of the troubled artist’s life through letters to his brother, Theo.

The stage set with projections of Van Gogh’s work made for an enchanting backdrop to the simple desk and chair Anderson uses to swap between narrative and the artists letters to his brother.

He tells the story of a complex man with an insatiable desire for love and need to create art that is inspired by those he meets.

As the story unfolds, the audience is guided through a range of emotions, at times lightening the mood with tongue-in-cheek humour, and at others confronting the sadness that Van Gogh struggled with for much of his life, as the narrator touches in on the highs and lows of the artists love interests.

The resulting portrait is complex filled with the colourful brushstrokes of a masterpiece, complete with the highlights and shadows of Van Gogh’s life.

Vincent premiered in May 2022 at the Umtiza Arts Festival in East London, and has since toured across the country, and even overseas.

The Centurion Theatre audience was clearly impressed with Anderson’s performance, and his expert grasp of the show.

Songs were recognisable and well-loved, but fitting in seamlessly with the storyline, with Anderson touching on the right emotional notes, even bringing tears to many in the audience.

Ferreira’s piano never skipped a beat, with the musician’s performance just as much a pleasure to watch as Anderson’s delivery.

Anderson told Rekord that he was taking a well-deserved break after the run at Centurion Theatre.

For those who have not seen it yet, Anderson said he was not ready to let go of Vincent just yet, with shows later in the year returning to Gauteng.
