UPDATE: Police investigate incident of two bodies found in lift shaft

Police have launched an inquest into the two decomposed bodies found in the basement of an abandoned building in the CBD on Tuesday, May 14.
The emergency services found the bodies when they responded to another incident in the GPG building on the corner of Bosman and Pretorius streets.
It was reported that someone had been badly injured when they fell into a lift shaft.
Police spokesperson Colonel Mavela Masondo said an inquest docket was open for further investigation into the discovery.
Gauteng Emergency Services spokesperson Annikie Lelaka said the injured victim was taken to hospital.
“The ambulance was dispatched around 05:56, and one patient was transported to Tshwane District Hospital,” she said.
The two bodies were taken by Forensic Pathology Service (FPS).
She said the emergency services responded to a fire at the premises but the Tshwane Emergency Services (EMS) found none.
EMS spokesperson Charles Mabaso his service was called to a fire at 04:32.
“There was a man who had fallen to the basement of the building through a lift shaft.
Police on the scene asked EMS for lighting and to create access to the victim,” said Mabaso.
He said EMS cut a door to the basement garage open then used a ladder to reach the injured man.
“The man was rescued, treated then transported to hospital in a stable condition,” Mabaso said.
He said during a search of the building, EMS personnel found two decomposed bodies floating in the water in the shaft.
Mabaso said police immediately declared a crime scene.
“EMS however remained on the scene to assist with the recovery of the two bodies.
Their cause of death and the injury are under police investigation,” said Mabaso
