Operation Shanela continues to sweep streets of Mamelodi

The arrested suspects included 59 people involved in gender-based violence, 7 for murder, 5 for attempted murder, 3 for armed robbery and 5 for rape.

Police arrested 566 suspects at the weekend during Operation Shanela in Mamelodi East and West.

Three uniformed groups, comprising two tactical teams, patrolled the crime hotspots, while also focussing on road safety, raiding of buildings and illicit liquor outlets in Mamelodi on May 18.

The operations were executed with the help of law enforcement agencies, including the departments of Home Affairs, labour, Gauteng traffic, Tshwane metro police and crime prevention wardens.

Police spokesperson Johan van Dyk said the suspects were arrested for an array of crimes, including possession of drugs, selling liquor without a licence, drunk driving, drinking in public and possession of illicit cigarettes.

“By the end of the weekend, 265 individuals were arrested for offences like assault, housebreaking, public drinking, driving under the influence and armed robbery,” said Van Dyk.

He said police also arrested 233 suspects including those involved in serious crimes such as 59 for gender-based violence, seven for murder, five for attempted murder, three for armed robbery, and five for rape.

“The team inspected 10 liquor premises, closed nine and confiscated 831 145ml of illicit liquor and sound equipment such as speakers, mixer and amplifier,” he said.

Van Dyk said 29 undocumented immigrants were detained for deportation, while 11 people were arrested and fined for drinking in public, as well as two employers of illegal immigrants.

“The undocumented immigrants were detained and will undergo deportation once the legal processes have been finalised.”

Van Dyk added 1 802 people and 528 vehicles were searched.

The police confiscated two vehicles for further investigation due to irregularities found with their engine numbers.
