Operation Shanela yields positive results in the North

The team continued their zero tolerance on crime in Tshwane with multidisciplinary crime combatting reaction teams.

Operation Shanela yielded positive results as police arrested 619 suspects for various crimes in the north of Pretoria on Mach 17.

The suspects were arrested for crimes ranging from possession of a stolen vehicle, possession of unlicensed firearm, assault, housebreaking, public drinking and armed robbery.

The police executed the operation with the help of other stakeholders including the departments of home affairs, labour, Gauteng traffic, Tshwane metro police, CPFs, crime prevention wardens and councillors.

According to police spokesperson Warrant-Officer Johan Van Dyk, the operation entailed high-visibility patrols in crime hotspots, compliance inspections, and raids on illicit liquor outlets.

Van Dyk said the police managed to recover two illegal firearms.

The police in Hammanskraal arrested one suspect for possession of a pistol.

“The suspect couldn’t produce a licence or give a reasonable explanation for why he had the firearm.

The police also conducted operations in the Pretoria North and Akasia where 256 suspects were nabbed “75 for gender-based violence, four for murder, 12 for attempted murder, three for armed robbery and nine for rape”.

The three uniformed groups comprising two tactical teams and a roadblock group inspected 16 liquor outlets and found five non-compliant with the Liquor Act.

“A total of 227 900ml of liquor was confiscated and will be destroyed upon finalisation of the criminal cases,” said Van Dyk.

Van Dyk said 42 undocumented foreigners were detained and will undergo deportation once the legal processes have been finalised.

“Two suspects were also arrested when police found two bags of cat in their possession, 32 Aarto infringement notices were issued.

Another suspect was nabbed for possession of 400 in illicit cigarettes,” said Van Dyk.

Police also inspected 1 110 vehicles and 1 935 people.
