Operation Shanela clamps down on crime in Jukulyn

Six shebeens were closed, thousands of liquor and two deep freezers were confiscated for not complying with the Liquor Act.

The Tshwane police have arrested over 300 suspects for various criminal activities in a recent operation in Jukulyn on Thursday, May 24.

The operation was conducted in collaboration with different law enforcement agencies, including the departments of Home Affairs, labour, Tshwane metro police and CPFs.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said they patrolled crime hotspots, conducting compliance inspections, and cracking down on illegal alcohol sales.

He said officers arrested 253 suspects for major crimes, including 68 for gender-based violence, 1 for murder, 2 for attempted murder, 7 for armed robbery and 6 for rape.

Van Dyk said one group was in charge of a roadblock while two teams patrolled the Rietgat area.

“Officers inspected 10 shebeens, closed 6 illegal ones, and confiscated thousands of litres of liquor and two deep freezers for non-compliance with the Liquor Act,” said Van Dyk.

He stated that 33 illegal immigrants were arrested for deportation.

Van Dyk said the comprehensive operation involved a thorough search of 552 individuals, 5 premises, and 374 vehicles, resulting in the discovery of stolen vehicles, illegal drugs, and illicit cigarettes.

“Another individual was arrested for possession of 4 800 illicit cigarettes. One person was arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol, and another was detained for public drinking,” he said.

“A total of 239 traffic violation notices were issued, totaling R281 900 in fines, and 2 vehicle licenses were discontinued for not being roadworthy,” added Van Dyk.
