315 suspects nabbed for various crimes during Operation Shanela

The operation force was divided into three groups: one group conducted a roadblock and two tactical teams were deployed in Ga-Rankuwa.

Tshwane police officers arrested 315 suspects for various crimes during Operation Shanela in the Ga-Rankuwa SAPS area on Thursday, June 6.

The operation was held in collaboration with various agencies, including Home Affairs, Labour, Traffic Department, metro police, and CPFs.

Police were under the leadership of acting district commissioner Brigadier Samuel Thine, and the operations involved patrols in crime hotspots, compliance inspections, and raids on illegal liquor outlets.

Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Johan van Dyk said detectives arrested 277 suspects during the operation.

He said among them 85 were arrested for gender-based violence, 6 for murder, 1 for attempted murder, 6 for armed robbery, and 3 for rape.

“There were three groups of officers. One executed a roadblock, and two tactical teams were deployed in Ga-Rankuwa,” he said.

Van Dyk said the teams inspected 19 liquor premises, identified 3 as non-compliant with liquor regulations, and confiscated liquor.

He said 29 people who are in the country illegally and two employers were arrested and charged pending the outcome of legal proceedings.

“In total, 1 121 people, 9 premises, 5 secondhand goods premises, and 785 vehicles were searched during the operation,” said Van Dyk.

He said that two individuals were arrested for possession and dealing in drugs, with seven bags containing various drugs and five grams of crystal meth found in their possession.

“Two other individuals were found in possession of an unlicensed firearm and were arrested when their house was searched after receiving a tip-off from the community,” he said.

Van Dyk added that two vehicles were removed from the road for being unroadworthy, and 124 traffic violation notices were issued, worth R56 550.
