Tshwane shares regulations to ensure safety of celebrations
Residents are advised to celebrate both Diwali and Guy Fawkes Day in a safe way.
Many Pretoria residents will be celebrating festivals in the coming week where firework displays could form part of the festivities.
Tshwane Emergency Services (EMS) has emphasised the importance of safety during these festivities that include Diwali on October 31 and November 1 and Guy Fawkes Day on November 5.
To ensure a safe and enjoyable celebration, the department has outlined essential guidelines for private fireworks displays.
Spokesperson Lindsay Mnguni said residents must obtain approval from the EMS before hosting a private fireworks display.
To qualify for approval, applicants must meet the following strict safety requirements:
– The area where fireworks are to be discharged must be at least 100m from buildings, roads, and railway lines
– The area must be at least 20m from telephone lines, telegraph lines, power lines, trees, and overhead obstructions
– An area extending 50m from the front and to the sides of the point at which the fireworks are to be discharged must be clear of persons
– The area to be kept clear of falling residue expected to drop from aerial fireworks must extend for at least 100m to the rear of the discharge point.
Mnguni said applicants should send the applications to the following:
– Chief of Emergency Services, PO Box 440, Pretoria, 0001; or – Fire Safety Section, Emergency Services Station 1, corner Bosman and Minnaar Street.
He said applicants must submit a detailed sketch plan (scale 1:500) of the grounds, including:
– Location of nearest buildings, roads, and railway lines
– Position of telephone lines, telegraph lines, power lines, and trees
– Spectator area and direction of fireworks discharge
– Location of firefighting equipment and emergency exits.
Mnguni said applicants should submit their application form, diagram, and letter of approval to the Office of the Chief of Emergency Services.
“Applicants must arrange for a fire safety inspection to be carried out on the premises by the Fire Safety Section, and be present during the inspection,” he said.
He added that applicants will then receive the written approval or disapproval for the private discharge of fireworks.
Written approval for the private discharge of fireworks will be given if it is planned to take place on sports fields, agricultural holdings, and other suitable open areas.
“The Office of the Chief of Emergency Services will review applications and conduct fire safety inspections. Written approval or disapproval will be issued based on the inspection findings,” he said.
