Woman airlifted to hospital after collision between sedan and bus
Staff of the metro's fire department had to use the Jaws of Life to do a roof-flip to enable paramedics to remove the badly injured woman from the wreck.
A seriously injured woman in her early 30s was airlifted to a trauma facility by Netcare911 after a bus and a sedan were involved in a collision on the corner of CR Swart Drive and Soutpansberg Road in Kilner Park.
The incident took place at about 19:00 on Wednesday.
According to a spokesperson for Pretoria Volunteer Emergency Services, JJ Pretorius, the injured driver of the bus was taken to hospital but no passengers were hurt.
He explained, that upon arrival, the woman was found entrapped in her vehicle with serious injuries to her chest and abdomen.
He said they decided to activate the advanced life support vehicle from Best Care Emergency Medical Service manned by Xander Loubser and two other paramedics, including Michael Gough from Pro Med Emergency Medical Services.
“Due to the unsafe condition for extraction, the paramedic on scene contacted the metro’s fire department to perform a rescue operation with the Jaws of Life.
After the driver of the sedan was safely rescued, she was airlifted to the hospital from CR Swart Drive. The rescue effort lasted over 90 minutes,” said Pretorius.
Additional units from the volunteer service were summoned to assist at the scene and make it safe.
Hugo Minnaar, CEO of Pretoria Volunteer Emergency Services, told Rekord the driver of the bus only sustained light injuries and was able to walk to the ambulance.
The passengers were taken away by a passing Putco bus.
Minnaar was impressed with the fire department staff’s technical skills.
“They had to apply a not-very-often-used technique to cut the top of the sedan in a roof-flip that was quite complicated and did a good job.”
Putco Bus Services was yet to respond to Rekord at the time of publication.
