Transport MMC wants buses to be on time, stations cleaner
MMC Tlangi Mogale plans to conduct a follow-up ride on a more crowded bus in the future.
Tshwane MMC for Roads and Transport Cllr Tlangi Mogale was not impressed with the arrival times of metro buses during a recent oversight ride.
Mogale took a bus ride from Wapadrand (Lynnwood Road and Solomon Mahlangu Drive) to the CBD to gain an insight into the experiences of daily commuters.
“It’s 08:22, our City of Tshwane bus schedule says the bus was supposed to be here at 08:05 and we were still waiting. We are told the bus was delayed but this is totally unacceptable as residents who are our primary clients rely on this public transport to get to their work/schools,” Mogale said.
Mogale was joined by members of her staff and went about chatting with local commuters during her trip, getting a grasp of the public’s feel toward the metro’s public transportation.
“We had a great ride. Clean, convenient and well-driven buses. This is one service department that if given all the support, it can blossom and enhance our revenue share. Based on today’s experience, timely bus schedules, improved station cleanliness and enhanced commuter engagement are top of my priority list,” Mogale said.
“I spoke to several commuters who shared their experiences and all of them emphasised the importance of punctuality regarding the arrival of buses at all stations, and that perhaps we should consider adding Visa and Mastercard services for their convenience.”
The MMC also recently announced that the Public Transport and Non-motorised Transport by-law is set to bring changes to the metro’s traffic control.
According to Mogale, the draft by-law is currently in the process of approval in Council, which will be followed by public participation processes.
Some of the draft proposals include:
– Creating a CBD parking management and decongestion strategy (levied parking environment)
– Leasing land parcels that are designated sites for public transport
– Managing ranking and holding facilities and allocating the associated code of conduct
– Regulating e-hailing and metered taxi services
– Regulating vendors, informal traders and recycling activities (trolley pushers) within streets, public transport corridors and precincts
– Exploring a regulated and levied model of organising permissible trading areas
– Creating transport assessment guidelines for developments (public transport and non-motorised transport).
