Mamelodi man arrested for possession of unlicensed firearm
Police Crime Prevention Unit members searched the man and found a 9mm pistol in his possession. He could not produce any valid documentation.
A 33-year-old Mamelodi man was arrested and charged for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Saturday.
Police spokesperson Constable Penelope Khulong said Crime Prevention Unit members arrested him while conducting their duties in the area.
The unit encountered two men and upon searching them, one of the men was found in possession of a 9mm pistol and nine rounds of ammunition.
“The suspect was further interviewed and could not account for the firearm or produce any valid documentation of the firearm,” said Khulong.
He was subsequently arrested and the firearm was confiscated for further investigation.
The station commander of Mamelodi East SAPS Brigadier Terence Naidoo welcomed the arrest and applauded the Crime Prevention members for intensifying the stop-and-searches.
He reiterated that this was one of the many ways in which the number of firearms that are used in the commission of crimes can be recovered.
The suspect will soon appear in the Mamelodi Magistrate’s Court.
