Tshwane Bon Accord quarry back in operation, boasting road repair efforts
The plant has the capacity to produce 300 tons of hot mix asphalt per day, which enables the metro to resurface roads efficiently.
The Tshwane metro has taken a step towards improving road infrastructure with the full operation of the Bon Accord Quarry, a key facility in Region 2.
During a site visit recently, Mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya emphasised the quarry’s role in producing materials for road resurfacing and pothole repairs.
The quarry, which houses a crusher and two asphalt plants, was declared non-compliant with safety regulations in 2023.
As a result, the renewal of the mine’s licence was delayed, and operations halted.
After addressing these concerns, the facility has now been issued a five-year atmospheric emission licence from the Gauteng Department of Agriculture and Rural Development.
“The plant has the capacity to produce 300 tons of hot mix asphalt per day, which enables the metro to resurface roads efficiently.
“The quarry’s ability to produce asphalt on-site will reduce the metro’s reliance on external providers, a step towards cost-saving and improved service delivery.”

Local residents were pleased with the resumption of the quarry’s operations.
“We’ve been dealing with terrible potholes for years, so this is definitely good news,” said Lebogang Molefi, a local resident of Region 2.
Another resident, John Moyepa, shared, “I’m glad the metro is taking action. We’ve needed proper road repairs for a long time, and this will make a difference.”
Moya affirmed that this development aligns with Tshwane’s 100-day Action Plan, prioritising the acceleration of road repairs.
With the quarry fully operational, the metro anticipates collecting around 100 tons of asphalt daily which is crucial for maintaining and upgrading its road infrastructure.
