Mams man arrested for unlicensed firearm and ammunition
The suspect was arrested by Mamelodi West police officers after receiving a tip-off.
A Mamelodi man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition on Wednesday.
Police spokesperson Captain Johan van Dyk said police were tipped off about an unlicensed firearm allegedly loaned out to criminals who commit robberies.
Van Dyk said an intelligence-driven operation was initiated to track and locate the suspect.
“Once the information was verified and the suspect’s residence identified, a coordinated takedown operation was planned and executed in Mamelodi West,” said Van Dyk.
He said police secured the premises and searched it thoroughly.
“A firearm, along with six rounds of ammunition and two magazines, was found hidden inside the house,” he said.
The suspect failed to produce a valid firearm licence or provide a reasonable explanation for its possession.
Van Dyk said as a result, the man was arrested for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The recovered firearm will undergo ballistic testing to determine whether it has been used in any other criminal activities.
Meanwhile, investigations are ongoing to establish potential links between the suspect and other crimes.
Tshwane district commissioner Major-General Samuel Thine commended the officers for their swift action and dedication to combating violent crime in the district.
