Mayor aids teams with sports equipment and apparel
There’s a shortage of soccer boots for some of the players at Onverwacht.
Several underprivileged youths in Onverwacht, Cullinan, east of Pretoria were recently supported with sports equipment and apparel.
Tshwane mayor Dr Nasiphi Moya appealed to the public and businesses to support sports development in underprivileged communities.
Moya handed over the equipment and apparel on Saturday, February 15.
“I am appealing to stakeholders and businesses in Tshwane to help support sports development in Tshwane by donating sports equipment and apparel for use by Onverwacht athletes and in other communities across the city,” said Moya.
Moya said that currently there’s a shortage of soccer boots for some of the players at Onverwacht.
“We would appreciate contributors to secure as many as possible.”
She said this visit followed a similar engagement held with the same community in July 2024, while serving as MMC for Community and Social Development Services.
“We had promised the young athletes that we would return to hand over the sports apparel following a sport and recreational outreach competition,” she said.
Moya said residents of Onverwacht form part of Tshwane’s most underprivileged communities and the young people of this community, too often, fall victim to alcohol and substance abuse as avenues for socialising.
“This, and other initiatives, are designed to provide more productive paths for growth and development.”
She added that as a caring and responsible city, our ultimate goal remains focused on keeping our children engaged in school and enriching extracurricular activities such as sports.
“We acknowledge that many of our children are unable to afford the shoes and clothing required to help them fulfil their sporting endeavours.”
