Metro’s technicians overstretched in repairing power outages
Tshwane spokesperson Lindela Mashigo says technicians are overstretched due to the vast network they need to cover, exacerbated by the high number of outages experienced over the past few hours.
Relentless rainfall in Tshwane has resulted in a significant backlog in service delivery, particularly in attending to power supply interruptions across the metro’s seven regions.

“This has resulted in a massive restoration backlog, which is further complicated by the need to prioritise the safety of our technicians,” said Mashigo.
He added that technicians are not allowed to work on the network during wet and rainy conditions, including pipe bursts that require welding.
Mashigo said the team is always on standby to take advantage whenever there is a pause in the downpours to attend to the outages.
“Tshwane has assured residents that it is committed to accelerating power restoration and appeals for patience while technicians strive to reduce the growing backlogs in various areas.”
He added that the metro’s water engineers are closely monitoring wastewater treatment plants, which are often affected by heavy rainfall.
Mashigo said waste collection and disposal services are currently manageable, but warned residents that intense rainfall may lead to delays in this service.
He said locals will be informed of the developments.

Given the backlog of technicians attending to power interruptions, the High Court in Pretoria temporarily suspended its operations today (February 18), due to the lack of power supply in its area.
The Office of the Chief Justice advised members of the public, court users and legal practitioners that the Gauteng Division of the High Court, Pretoria would temporarily cease operations due to a power outage in the Tshwane CBD affecting the court.
“The court’s generator is currently out of commission,” it said.
Affected parties will be contacted regarding alternative arrangements for all matters scheduled on the court roll for the day.
