Fort West power project plagued by illegal connections
The project is set to benefit nearly 700 beneficiaries with a reliable electricity supply.
Vandalism and illegal electrical connections have delayed the progress of the Fort West Ext 4 electrification project in Region 3, Ward 7.
This is according to the MMC for Utility Services, Frans Boshielo, who conducted a recent site visit to the Atteridgeville-based station.
Boshielo and supporting officials observed that the project involved the construction of low- and medium-voltage electrical network infrastructure, as well as consumer connections.
The MMC said that his department alongside the metro’s energy and electricity officials are determined to ensure the project is completed despite delays. He also commended residents in the area for paying their service bills.
“This critical project will provide electricity to 690 beneficiaries, expanding access to safe and reliable power while reducing illegal connections. Despite delays, the project remains on track for completion within the prescribed timeframe. However, vandalism of infrastructure has been noted as a serious concern. Encouragingly, the community has shown strong support for the project and remains committed to paying for their electricity,” Boshielo said.
Beyond electrification, beneficiaries of the Expanded Public Works Programme (EPWP) were able to take advantage of the employment opportunities which arose as well as local small enterprises, fostering skills development within the community.
“The city will continue prioritising infrastructure projects that improve service delivery and enhance revenue collection, ensuring that residents receive the services they deserve,” Boshielo said.
