New hole in Centurion sparks sinkhole fears
The area was secured with barriers yesterday afternoon.
A new hole has formed in DF Malan Avenue in Lyttelton, Centurion, leaving residents in the area concerned about its potential impact.
While it is still unclear whether the hole can be classified a sinkhole, Tshwane metro officials and a geologist are on-site to conduct further investigations.
Their assessment will determine if the formation is indeed a sinkhole, as well as its size and extent.
Ward Councillor Johan van Burren confirmed that the hole began forming yesterday [February 18] and expanded significantly during the night.
“The area was secured with barriers yesterday afternoon,” he said.
“Further investigations are underway to establish if it is a sinkhole or a road subsidence.”
The incident has reignited concerns among Centurion residents, who are no stranger to sinkholes.
