Six stolen motorcycles recovered in Marabastaad
Police also arrested a 42-year-old suspect during the recovery as one of the bikes still had its tracking on.
Police recently thwarted a smuggling operation of six motorcycles out of Marabastad, Pretoria central.
The Pretoria Central police on February 24 recovered one bike, which still had its tracker on, during the arrest of a 42-year-old suspect following a tip-off from the tracking company.
Police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise said police believed that the bikes and parts would have been transported out of the country.
“An intensified search was conducted at the cross-border taxi rank to Maputo, while on the scene a big silver container of about 6m was spotted. Upon unlocking it, a staggering number of motorbikes with an estimated value of R200 000 were uncovered.
A suspect, aged 42 years old, who is one of the leading taxi co-ordinators, was immediately arrested after failing to produce valid documentation to possess and transport the motorbikes across the border,” Nkumise said.
The suspect was charged with possession of stolen property and is expected to appear in the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court pending further investigation.
He said police were still tracing other suspects in the crime.
The station commander, Brigadier Hlengani Gibin Mashaba applauded and congratulated the six-member team of Captain Nthuteng Mogotsi, Sergeant Matlakala, Constable Masetshu, Constable Tlhapane, Constable Phahlamohlaka, and Constable Mashava for such a commendable discovery and arrest.
The motorbikes have since been booked at the Pretoria West police station for safekeeping.
The community is urged to anonymously report any criminal conduct to the police as whistleblowing is very vital and part of the efforts to curb the surge of crime in society.
