Contact crimes drop in the north

Police stations in the north of Pretoria have shown a decrease in contact crimes in the latest quarterly crime stats released by police minister Senzo Mchunu for the 2024/25 financial year on February 21.

The statistics indicate the crimes reported to the country’s 1 163 police stations from October to December 2024.

Contact crimes, which include offences like murder, sexual assault, and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm (GBH), saw notable shifts in the north.

Pretoria North

A decrease of 16.1% has been reported in contact crimes.

Robberies with aggravating circumstances decreased by 19 counts (from 67 to 48 cases) and assault cases increased by 6 counts (88 to 94).

Assault with intent to cause GBH cases decreased by 17 counts (52 to 35) and rape cases decreased by 4 counts (13 to 9).

Two counts of sexual assault were recorded, compared to the one reported in the previous quarter.

Carjackings increased by 5 counts to 13 and robberies at non-residential premises remained the same with only 4 cases reported.

Robberies at residential premises decreased by 3 counts to 10.

No cases of arson were reported while 45 of malicious damage to property were reported, 8 more than last year.

Burglary at non-residential premises increased by one count to 20 cases but there was a decrease of 17 counts to residential property burglaries.

Motor vehicle and motorcycle theft cases increased by 2 counts.

Detected illegal firearm and ammunition possession crimes decreased by 3 counts and 7 more counts of driving under the influence (DUI) were recorded from the 24 in the last quarter.

Akasia

The Akasia SAPS reported a 10.6% decrease in contact crimes, with no attempted murder cases reported.

Assault with intent to cause GBH decreased by 1.5% (131 cases to 12) and cases of common assault by 8.6% (245 to 224). Common robberies decreased by 27 counts (now 30) and murder cases by 8 counts (now 13) while sexual offences increased by 2 (now 5).

Cases of robbery with aggravating circumstances decreased by 2.2%, from 227 cases down to 222.

This quarter, 19 rapes were reported.

Carjackings increased by 15 counts to 47 and robberies at non-residential premises decreased by 7 counts to 12 cases.

Sinoville

Contact crimes (crimes against people) saw a decrease of 1.4% this quarter.

Murder counts remained the same, with one case being reported and sexual offences decreased by 3 counts as 5 cases were reported.

A total of 12 cases of assault GBH cases were reported and common assault cases decreased by 18.8% (from 64 to 52).

Common robberies decreased by 5 counts, with 13 cases reported this quarter and robberies with aggravating circumstances increased by 14 counts.

Two rape cases were reported and 2 other sexual offences were reported.

Carjackings increased by 2 counts and 9 robberies at residential premises took place, while 5 robberies at non-residential premises were recorded.

Malicious damage to property cases increased by 1 count (now 36).

A total of 20 cases of burglary at non-residential premises were recorded and there was a decrease of 1.4% in burglary at residential premises at 74 cases.

Theft of motor vehicle and motorcycle cases decreased by 36.5% to 80.

Police detected 4 cases of illegal firearms and ammunition, compared to 3 in the last quarter.
