Stats show contact crime in Mamelodi is of big concern
Crime against people (crime committed by direct physical harm or force) remains a huge problem for both the Mamelodi East and West police precincts.
The third quarter statistics released by the police minister last Friday reveal that crime detected by police has increased by 22.2% in Mamelodi West, while a decrease of 1.4% was recorded in the east.
Police Minister Senzo Mchunu announced the crime statistics for the third quarter of the 2024/2025 financial year, covering the period from October 1 to December 31 2024 at the Government Communication and Information System (GCIS).
Community-reported serious crime increased from 1 323 to 1 420 cases in Mamelodi East, as property-related crime decreased from 149 to 127 cases. These have decreased in Mamelodi West, with a decrease in community-reported serious crimes from 750 to 727 cases reported and property-related crime decreased by 26.2% from 107 to 79 cases reported.
Contact-related crimes increased from 46 to 64 cases in Mamelodi West, while trio crimes (carjackings, house robberies and business robberies) increased from 29 to 33 cases.
In Mamelodi East, contact crimes increased from 138 to 154 cases, while trio crimes decreased from 104 to 101 cases.
Crime against the person (crime committed by direct physical harm or force) also remains a huge problem for both the Mamelodi East and West police precincts. In Mamelodi East, it increased from 757 to 863 cases, while in Mamelodi West precinct an increase from 353 to 393 cases were reported.
Mchunu urged all South Africans to report criminal activities, co-operate with the police, and participate in community policing forums.
“Fighting crime is not a task for law enforcement alone, it requires the active participation of communities, the private sector and various stakeholders,” said Mchunu.
“We appeal to communities to work hand in hand with law enforcement. Crime thrives in silence.
“We are enhancing our collaboration with the private sector and civil society to strengthen crime prevention measures and improve public safety.”
He commended law enforcement agencies for their diligent work.
“As the Ministry of Police, we remain resolute in our commitment to upholding the constitutional promise of safety and security for all.
“These crime statistics reflect progress, but they also highlight areas requiring urgent intervention.”
He concluded by assuring South Africans that the police were working hard to address these challenges and that they will not relent in their efforts to build a safer, more secure nation.
