Man to appear in court for possession of unlicensed firearm
Moloto said the firearm has been seized and will be sent for forensic analysis to determine if it has been used in any other serious or violent crimes in the area.
A 37-year-old man is expected to make his first court appearance in the Pretoria North Magistrate’s Court on May 19, following his arrest for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition.
The arrest took place on May 15.
The Pretoria North SAPS Crime Prevention Unit, the Soshanguve K9 Unit, and vehicle tracking company Cartrack acted swiftly on a tip-off regarding a suspect believed to have an illegal firearm.
Pretoria North SAPS spokesperson, Sergeant Tumisang Moloto, said the man was driving a white Mazda hatchback when he was spotted along Broodryk Street.
He said that upon seeing the police, he sped away, resulting in a chase through the streets of Pretoria North.
“The suspect was eventually cornered in President Steyn Street.
“A thorough search of the vehicle led to the discovery of a .38 calibre revolver loaded with four live rounds of ammunition. The suspect was unable to provide a valid firearm licence and was arrested on the spot,” said Moloto.
Moloto said the firearm has been seized and will be sent for forensic analysis to determine if it has been used in any serious or violent crime.
Station commander Colonel Nonzwakazi Julla praised the joint operation, noting the importance of public cooperation in fighting crime.
“I want to congratulate the team for the arrest and recovery of the firearm from individuals who are regarded as bad elements in the broader community. I also appreciate the tip-off from the public, which led to the arrest,” she said.
