Elders brace for winter with cosy comforts and groceries
Elderly residents said they look forward to using the blankets and food to keep warm this winter.
Elders at an old age home in Soshanguve are now ready to keep the winter chill away with new comforts and plenty of groceries after receiving donations on May 20.
Leratong Old Age Home received cosy comforts and essential groceries, including non-perishable items and cleaning materials, from the Tshwane metro.
The donation was met with heartfelt appreciation and bright smiles from the elderly patients and dedicated staff.
Johanna Makgalanyane, founder of the home, expressed her relief and appreciation.
“I’m so overwhelmed with happiness today, we have been shown love and care by our municipality.
“Winter can be a particularly challenging season, especially with the expensive cost of living while we are not getting any income.”
She said the home appreciates every single bit of assistance because they struggle with the mere income to cover every need.
“We are mostly dependent on the elders’ grants to provide for their needs. Other than that, I go around asking for any bit of assistance from anyone who can help, like retail shops that offer what they can afford, like bread.”
Linah Sebola (79) appreciated the fact that, as elders, they are still remembered.
“It’s truly heartwarming to know that we are also remembered and cared for as we get older. You youngsters must keep us in mind and remember that we brought you into this world.
“This will make our winter so much more comfortable, I will wrap it around my waist to keep cold from getting to my knees and feet,” she said as she clutched her new soft blanket.
Another resident, Mirriam Mkhize (74), said she looks forward to enjoying soup as it is getting colder by the day.
