Police officer accused of raping teen remains in custody
The accused allegedly threatened the teen with a gun if she didn't comply with his demands.
The case of a Cullinan police officer accused of raping a teenage girl has been postponed to August 18 after he recently appeared at the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court.
Spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (IPID), Phaladi Shuping, said the postponement was to allow for the finalisation of a bail application by the accused.
“The case against a 29-year-old constable from Cullinan SAPS Vispol Unit accused of rape was postponed to August 18 for continuation of bail application.”
Shuping said the accused police officer was arrested last week for the alleged rape of a 17-year-old girl on August 3.
“It is alleged that the police officer, who is a friend and colleague of the complainant’s brother, fetched the complainant from her home to go and chill somewhere.”
He said the accused allegedly became aggressive and threatened the complainant with a firearm.
“He allegedly fired randomly to show the complainant that he was carrying a real firearm, and threatened to use it if the complainant did not comply with his demands,”
Shuping said the police officer then drove to his place, where he allegedly raped the complainant, before dropping her off at a shop near her home.
According to him, the accused was arrested on August 7 after IPID took over the investigation.
“He made his first appearance in the Cullinan Magistrate’s Court on August 8, and the case was postponed to August 12 for bail application,” he said.
He added that the bail application could not be finalised, and that the case was postponed for continuation of the bail application.
Shuping said the police officer will remain in custody.
