House break-ins plague east

Security role players urge homeowners to stay alert and ensure alarm systems are working, as reports of house robberies continue to rise in Pretoria east.

Residents in Pretoria east have been urged to remain vigilant after a recent increase in house robberies.

Community policing forums and private security companies say patrols and surveillance are being strengthened, but residents must also play an active role in protecting their homes.

Brooklyn CPF chairperson Rudy Brown said the CPF is aware of growing concern and is working with security partners to address the problem.

“The camera system that we are planning to install will help with that at this stage, and we will increase patrols,” he said.
Brown confirmed a noticeable rise in house robberies in the eastern parts of Pretoria, which has alarmed residents.

Private security firms operating in the area report a steady number of residential break-ins.

CSI operations manager Gerhard Rossouw urged homeowners to ensure their security systems are functioning and that their contact details with security providers are up to date.

“Residents must constantly check and test their alarm systems,” he said, adding that maintaining communication with security companies ensures a quick response during emergencies.

Rossouw stressed the importance of keeping phone numbers current and activating alarms so control rooms can reach residents if an incident occurs. He said most recent call-outs relate to typical residential break-ins.

CSI also co-ordinates with other security companies for backup when alarms or suspected break-ins are reported. “We normally give back-up to each other if there is a possibility of a house break-in because it comes through the groups,” he explained.

Security stakeholders encourage residents to report suspicious activity.
