High-density operation yields 1 170 arrests

A hijacked vehicle, which was reported in Erasmia, was recovered.

The Tshwane metro police arrested 1 170 suspects for various serious crimes and recovered a hijacked vehicle during Operation Shanela, which was conducted across Gauteng on March 28.

Captain Tintswalo Sibeko said the acting provincial commissioner of Gauteng, Major-General Mbuso Khumalo, led a successful high-density provincial operation in Soshanguve and Rietgat.

Sibeko added that 17 suspects were arrested at a roadblock for driving under the influence of alcohol.

“A total of 38 undocumented persons were apprehended, while eight suspects were arrested for dealing in and possession of drugs,” she added.

She mentioned that one individual was arrested for employing an undocumented person.

“One suspect was arrested for possession of a hijacked vehicle, a Hyundai i10, which was reported in Erasmia earlier in March,” stated Sibeko.

She said the TMPD issued traffic fines to the value of R13 400 during the operation.

She also mentioned that provincial detectives intensified efforts to trace wanted suspects, resulting in the arrest of 755 individuals overnight, 67 of whom were for crimes against women and children.

“The operation was a collaborative effort between the SAPS, Department of Home Affairs, all traffic departments, CPFs, and private security companies,” concluded Sibeko.
