Confident Sundowns Ladies ready for Richmond challenge
Banyana Ba Style will look to build on their flawless start to the season when they face Richmond United, aiming to extend their unbeaten run and strengthen their position at the top of the table.
Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies will look to continue their perfect start to the Hollywoodbets Super League season when they play against Richmond United on Saturday, June 27, at 15:00.
The defending champions will be heading into the encounter full of confidence after producing a commanding performance in their most recent league outing, a 4–0 victory over the University of Pretoria at Tuks Stadium on June 19.
Banyana Ba Style wasted little time stamping their authority on that match. Karabo Dhlamini opened the scoring in the 12th minute with a strike from outside the box to give her side an early advantage.
The visitors continued to dominate possession and create chances, forcing the Tuks team into an own goal eight minutes later as they struggled to cope with the relentless attacking pressure.
Sundowns extended their lead in the 32nd minute when Noxolo Cesane finished off an impressive attacking move, showcasing the team’s sharp passing combinations and confidence going forward.
Substitute Munashe Mugwara completed the scoring in the 84th minute, putting the finishing touches on a disciplined and professional display that once again highlighted the depth and quality available within the squad.
Midfielder Nonhlanhla Mthandi played a key role in the victory and was rewarded with her second consecutive Player of the Match award.
Reflecting on the performance, Mthandi said the team was pleased with how effectively they implemented the work done on the training ground.
“Today’s game was very positive for us as a team. I think we played really good football. We combined well in different phases of play and we were able to convert the chances we created. What made me happiest was that a lot of what we did on the pitch came directly from what we worked on during training,” she said.
“It shows that we are improving in terms of understanding each other and applying our game model consistently in matches.”
New signing Wendy Shongwe also expressed satisfaction with the team’s display and said she is settling into life at Sundowns well.
“I think the team performed very well today. It is always encouraging when you can score goals and still feel that there is more to come from the group in terms of performance and chemistry. For me personally, I am settling in well and I am really looking forward to contributing more,” said Shongwe.
“My next target is to open my goal account for Sundowns, but more importantly, to keep helping the team win and compete at a high level every week.”
The emphatic win over Tuks strengthened Sundowns’ position at the top of the Hollywoodbets Super League standings.
The Brazilians have collected the maximum six points from their opening two matches, scoring 10 goals and conceding none.
With momentum firmly on their side, the Brazilians will be aiming to maintain their unbeaten start when they take on Richmond United this weekend.
Another victory would further underline their early title credentials as they continue their pursuit of yet another league crown.
