Silverton attempted murder and robbery duo await bail hearing

A security officer escaped with the cash despite being shot at during an alleged robbery attempt outside a Silverton gambling establishment. Two suspects have since been arrested.

The Pretoria Magistrate’s Court has postponed the attempted murder and armed robbery case against Jabulani Mthombeni (47) and Billy Tshepiso Malope (52) to 13 July for bail investigations.

The two were arrested on 7 July in connection with an alleged attempted robbery and attempted murder in Silverton.

According to National Prosecuting Authority (NPA) spokesperson Tshegofatso Makhudu, it is alleged that a security officer collected cash from a gambling establishment and was walking to a company vehicle parked in the driveway when he was accosted.

Makhudu said the accused opened fire on the security officer in an apparent robbery attempt while he was carrying the cash.

“During the exchange of gunfire, the security officer managed to run back to the cash office with the money,” she explained.

Makhudu said the suspects fled the scene before police arrived.

She added that the injured security officer was transported to hospital for medical treatment.

Makhudu said that following reports of the shooting, members of the SAPS launched an investigation and traced the suspects to Nellmapius.

“Upon arrival at Malope’s residence, police searched, located him, and arrested him. During the operation, Mthombeni was found hiding at a nearby residence, a few houses away, and was also arrested.”

Makhudu said the pair made a brief appearance at the Pretoria Magistrate’s Court.

“The NPA remains committed to working with law enforcement agencies to ensure that perpetrators of violent crimes are brought before the courts and held accountable.”
