Multi-agency Operation Shanela delivers hundreds of arrests in Tshwane crackdown

Co-ordinated operations in Silverton and Mamelodi resulted in over 380 arrests for violent crime, immigration offences, drug dealing, illegal firearms, and drunken driving.

Police arrested 383 suspects during the ongoing Operation Shanela carried out between July 8–9 in the Silverton and Mamelodi policing precincts recently.

The SAPS, alongside the TMPD, Gauteng Traffic Police, Department of Home Affairs and CPFs, were among the role players in the operation’s successes.

These efforts resulted in the arrest of 247 wanted suspects linked to serious and violent crimes, including two for murder, nine for attempted murder, 94 for various assault cases, and two for rape.

“Compliance inspections focused on immigration and business-related matters. A total of 67 undocumented foreign nationals were detained and handed over to immigration officials for further processing.

“In addition, three individuals were arrested and fined R10 000 each for harbouring undocumented foreign nationals, and three were arrested for employing illegal immigrants,” said SAPS spokesperson, Captain Johan van Dyk.

Law enforcement teams also inspected 16 liquor outlets, of which five were closed for not being compliant with the applicable liquor legislation.

High-density patrols and roadblocks were also conducted in identified crime hotspot areas. During these operations, 484 people and 256 vehicles were searched.

Police arrested 22 people for drunk driving and 18 for drinking in public. Five additional arrests were made for the unlawful possession of firearms and ammunition.

Crime prevention patrols also yielded positive results, with 12 suspects arrested for the possession of and dealing in drugs.

Police confiscated 17 bags containing various narcotics, as well as 38l of illegal liquor.

Major-General Samuel Thine commended all participating members and stakeholders for their efforts.

“We thank you for your dedication, commitment, and professionalism. I want to reiterate that continued collaboration between law enforcement agencies and community structures remains essential in the fight against crime and in ensuring safer communities throughout the Tshwane District,” Major-General Thine said.
