Two cable theft suspects caught in the act in East Lynne
The metro police unit received information about two men digging up electricity cables along Koedoespoort Road in East Lynne.
The TMPD K9 Unit arrested two suspects for allegedly tampering with essential infrastructure in East Lynne on July 20.
TMPD spokesperson Superintendent Isaac Mahamba said the arrests were made after the K9 Unit received information about individuals digging up electricity cables along Koedoespoort Road.
He said working alongside other law enforcement agencies, officers responded to the scene where they allegedly caught the suspects in the act.
“The two men were found in possession of suspected electricity cables containing copper and were immediately arrested.”
Mahamba said the suspects now face charges of tampering with essential infrastructure and possession of suspected stolen property.
According to him, the arrests highlight the department’s commitment to protecting critical infrastructure and ensuring those responsible for damaging public assets are brought to justice.
“The Tshwane Metro Police Department remains committed to combating crimes related to essential infrastructure. These arrests demonstrate the value of public tip-offs and the co-ordinated efforts of our officers and law enforcement partners,” he said.
He urged residents to continue reporting suspicious activities around electrical infrastructure, substations, and cable routes “so that together we can protect infrastructure that is vital to service delivery.”
Cable theft and damage to electricity infrastructure continue to disrupt power supply in many parts of Pretoria, often resulting in prolonged outages and costly repairs.
Mahamba said community co-operation remains crucial in preventing infrastructure-related crimes and ensuring uninterrupted service delivery to residents.
The suspects are expected to appear in court soon.
