Residents in Pretoria North have welcomed ongoing road repairs and cleaning in Ward 2, viewing the work as a meaningful move toward improved safety and municipal services in the area.

The municipal maintenance teams have been hard at work at the corner of West Street and Rachel de Beer Street, where major pothole patching was underway to improve driving conditions and reduce the risk of damage to vehicles, while the stormwater catchpit cleaning and street cleaning were also being carried out along West Street to improve drainage systems and keep the area clean.

Ward 2 councillor Quentin Meyer said the maintenance forms part of ongoing efforts to improve infrastructure and the quality of life for residents.

“We are pleased to see municipal teams on the ground addressing some of the service delivery concerns raised by residents.

“Pothole repairs and the cleaning of stormwater infrastructure are essential in ensuring safer roads and reducing the risk of flooding during periods of heavy rain. I would like to thank all the teams involved for their continued commitment to improving Ward 2,” said Meyer.

Residents who regularly use West Street said the maintenance was long overdue and had already made a noticeable difference.

Pretoria North resident Annelize Botha, who travels along West Street daily, said the potholes had become a major concern for motorists.

“The road was becoming increasingly difficult to drive on, and the repairs will help protect our vehicles and make the road much safer.

“It is encouraging to see maintenance crews responding to the community’s concerns,” she said.

Another resident, Themba Mokoena, welcomed the street and stormwater cleaning, saying blocked drains had often caused problems during heavy rainfall.

“When the catch pits become blocked, water collects on the road and creates dangerous driving conditions.

“Keeping the drains clean also makes the area look much better. We hope this maintenance continues across other streets in Pretoria North,” he said.

Residents added that regular maintenance of roads and stormwater infrastructure helps prevent costly future repairs.

They also said cleaner streets create a more welcoming environment for everyone.

The maintenance is part of the metro’s ongoing efforts to enhance municipal infrastructure and address community needs in Ward 2.

While residents praised the current work, many expressed hope that similar maintenance projects would be extended to other deteriorating roads in Pretoria North.

They said proactive maintenance, rather than waiting for infrastructure to fail, would go a long way in improving road safety and restoring confidence in municipal service delivery.
