A month after his second cochlear implant was activated, 13-year-old Zuan Brümmer is already hearing more clearly, rediscovering his confidence, and embracing opportunities that once seemed out of reach.

This milestone was made possible after the Centurion community, alongside various sponsors and donors, rallied together to raise the funds needed for the life-changing procedure in just eight months.

Their collective effort allowed Zuan to complete his journey towards receiving cochlear implants in both ears.

Zuan’s hearing loss began at infancy due to complications from scarlet fever, which left him with severe hearing impairment.

In October last year, he received his first cochlear implant, marking a pivotal step in restoring his hearing.

While the family recognised that this was only the beginning of a long and challenging road, they remained hopeful that a second implant would one day follow.

That hope became a reality when the community united behind them to secure the necessary funding for the procedure.

Zuan underwent his second surgery on May 25, and the implant was activated on June 23.

According to his mother, Louise, Zuan approached the second operation with greater calmness, as he knew what to expect.

However, the recovery process was more challenging compared to the first.

She explained that Zuan experienced nausea, pain, and balance issues during his recovery, in addition to hearing strange sounds prior to the implant’s activation.

Despite these difficulties, the benefits of the second implant became evident almost immediately after it was switched on.

“Within days of his second implant being activated, we noticed a huge improvement in his hearing. It was as if the second ear kicked in much stronger and quicker. With both implants, his hearing is so much clearer,” said Louise.

She added that Zuan is already hearing about 80% with his new implant, while his first implant has improved to about 70%.

Although some sounds in the second ear remain unfamiliar as he continues to adapt, the overall progress has been remarkable.

Louise noted that one of the most significant changes has been the return of Zuan’s vibrant personality.

She recalled how, before his hearing deteriorated, he was a happy and outgoing child. However, as his hearing loss worsened, even with the use of hearing aids since the age of two, he became withdrawn and often sad, struggling to keep up with conversations.

“After being implanted, I could see his personality return to the happy boy I’m used to. He’s now more positive and outgoing again.”

Receiving both cochlear implants has also lifted a tremendous weight off the family’s shoulders.

Louise expressed relief and gratitude, acknowledging that while Zuan’s journey is far from over, having both implants provides him with a future full of possibilities.

She said the next steps for her son include improving his listening skills and catching up on his reading, which had been affected by his hearing loss. Though he speaks fluently, reading remains an area where he still needs support.

The implants have also allowed Zuan to rediscover his love for playing the drums, something that now brings him even more joy as he can hear his surroundings with greater clarity.

His mom believes this improvement will further enhance his ability to understand conversations and everyday communication.

“We as a family would like to thank every sponsor and every person who donated, no matter how small. Even the smallest contributions made a big difference in changing Zuan’s future.

“This journey taught us that you should never give up hope. There are people out there who truly care and step up for those in need. Sometimes it’s hard to hold on, but you should never lose hope,” added Louise.

Community volunteer Annette Cronje, who spearheaded the fundraising campaign, described the successful completion of the project as an incredible blessing.

She initially shared Zuan’s story on WhatsApp groups and with people she knew before enlisting the help of community member Marius Bester, whose involvement provided the campaign with significant momentum.

Cronje said she never doubted that the community would rally behind Zuan and his family.

“We thank God for making this possible. I was merely an instrument to help get this project finished, so he can have a bright future with both ears hearing.”

She also expressed her gratitude to everyone who contributed to changing Zuan’s life, emphasising that the campaign demonstrated the power of a community coming together for a common purpose.
