The Dr George Mukhari Academic Hospital (GMAH) recently opened its newly refurbished Male Neurosurgical Ward, marking a milestone in strengthening specialised healthcare services for patients across Gauteng and neighbouring provinces.

The upgraded 27-bedded ward includes six ICU beds and six high-care beds, providing modern facilities for patients requiring advanced neurosurgical treatment and close clinical monitoring.

Originally constructed in 1972, the ward has undergone an extensive refurbishment to meet current healthcare infrastructure standards.

The modernised facility has been designed to improve patient safety, enhance infection prevention and control measures, and create a more efficient working environment for healthcare professionals.

The ward provides specialised treatment for patients suffering from brain injuries, spinal injuries, brain tumours, hydrocephalus, stroke-related neurosurgical conditions and other neurological disorders that require complex medical intervention.

The refurbishment has also improved bed spacing and accessibility, allowing healthcare workers to provide more effective care while ensuring greater comfort and safety for patients.

Enhanced clinical spaces are expected to support improved monitoring of critically ill patients and contribute to better rehabilitation outcomes.

The Chief Executive Officer of GMAH, Dr Fhatuwani Godfrey Mbara, said the refurbished ward represents an important investment in the future of specialised healthcare.

“The opening of this modern neurosurgical ward reflects our commitment to providing patients with high-quality, specialised healthcare services in a safe and dignified environment.

“By investing in modern infrastructure, we are strengthening our ability to deliver life-saving neurosurgical care while improving the overall patient experience for those who depend on our services,” said Mbara.

The upgraded facility is expected to improve communication between healthcare teams and patients’ families, creating a more patient-centred approach to treatment.

Better clinical layouts will also support multidisciplinary teamwork, enabling doctors, nurses, and allied healthcare professionals to collaborate more effectively in delivering specialised care.

For patients requiring neurosurgical treatment, the new ward is expected to reduce challenges associated with ageing infrastructure while providing access to equipment and facilities designed to support improved clinical outcomes.

The project forms part of the Gauteng Department of Health’s ongoing efforts to modernise public healthcare facilities and ensure that residents have access to quality specialised medical services closer to home.

Investments in hospital infrastructure remain a key priority as the province continues to respond to increasing demand for advanced healthcare services.
