Water supply disrupted in Hammanskraal following vandalism at Temba plant

Households in parts of Tshwane face ongoing water outages after key pumping equipment was damaged by vandals.

Households in Hammanskraal and surrounding areas face continued water disruptions following extensive infrastructure damage caused by vandalism.

The Temba Water Treatment Plant stopped operating on October 10 after its raw water pump station was vandalised. The incident also disrupted the Renstown water supply system, leaving several communities without water.

Affected areas include Sekampaneng, Renstown, Hammanskraal West, Suurman, Units 5 and 7, and Kanana. The disruption has left households struggling to carry out daily activities, including cooking, cleaning, and maintaining basic hygiene.

City waiting on materials

The City of Tshwane has completed its assessment of the damage and identified the required components, but repair work will only start once the materials arrive on site.

City spokesperson Lindela Mashigo said the municipality has initiated the procurement process to obtain the required parts.

“The damage is extensive and will require careful repair work to restore the plant to operation,” said Mashigo.

Mashigo added that an estimated restoration time is not yet available and that affected customers will be kept informed as work progresses.

City condemns infrastructure destruction

The municipality condemned the vandalism, describing the destruction of essential infrastructure as a problem that places additional pressure on resources that could otherwise be used for other service delivery needs.

Residents have been urged to report vandalism, suspicious activities, or any information that could help identify those responsible to the police.

Mashigo also warned residents against harbouring suspected vandals or helping conceal their activities, stressing that protecting water infrastructure is a shared responsibility.

The municipality apologised for the continued inconvenience and thanked affected customers for their patience as efforts to restore the water supply continue.

Residents must wait for the required materials to arrive before repair work can commence, with no confirmed date for the restoration of normal water supply.
