Ward 98 councillor highlights road safety after Heatherdale maintenance

Recent maintenance work in Heatherdale aims to make roads safer for motorists travelling between local communities.

Ward 98 councillor Mickey van der Westhuizen has highlighted the importance of road safety following repairs to traffic-calming measures and the repainting of road markings at the corner of Boundary Road and Berg Avenue in Heatherdale.

The work aims to maintain road infrastructure used by motorists travelling between different communities.

“Traffic safety is one of the key things that should happen in the ward because the ward has many roads that connect different communities and motorists should always follow road rules and be vigilant on the road,” said Van der Westhuizen.

Tree pruning improves driver visibility

The maintenance update also included tree pruning along Waterbok, highlighting the importance of keeping roads and surrounding public spaces clear of potential obstructions.

Overhanging branches, overgrown vegetation and other obstacles can affect visibility, obscure road signs and make it difficult for motorists to see pedestrians and approaching vehicles.

Resident Johan Nel said keeping roads clear was important for motorists’ visibility and overall safety.

“Keeping roads clear of overhanging trees and other obstructions is important because motorists need a clear view of the road ahead,” said Nel. “Regular maintenance can help prevent visibility problems and make travelling safer for everyone.”

Pedestrians need safe access

Another resident, Virginia Cooper, said road safety also means ensuring pedestrians can move around safely.

“Road safety is not only about repairing potholes and repainting road markings,” said Cooper. “It is also about making sure that roads and pavements are free of obstructions that could put people at risk.”

Cooper added that overgrown vegetation should be maintained where it affects visibility or forces pedestrians closer to moving traffic.

While infrastructure maintenance helps address specific concerns, road safety also depends on motorists obeying traffic rules, remaining alert and approaching intersections cautiously.
