Crime hotspot veld set for major community development
Plans to redevelop an open veld into a hospital, police station and shopping centre have been welcomed by residents, who believe the project will improve safety and reduce crime in the area.
A dangerous open veld located on Alwyn Road in Nellmapius,Ward 86 is due to be converted into a community asset to prevent the area from becoming a crime hotspot.
The announcement was made by Ward 86 Councillor Kholofelo Kgopotso following a recent report back to residents by Aaron Maluleka, MMC for Housing and Human Settlements, held at Nellmapius Green House.
According to Clr Kgopotso, the open veld was originally private land, set aside to build low-cost houses, but it was handed back to Tshwane Housing and Human Settlements.
Kgopotso said during the briefing that the MMC for Housing and Human Settlement had announced that there are plans set aside to build a 24-hour hospital, a police station and a shopping centre for Nellmapius residents.
“The upcoming developments on the veld will help in fighting crime in Nellmapius,” said Kgopotso.
The main challenge surrounding the open veld is safety, as children use the veld as a short-cut to go to nearby schools in Nellmapius Ext 1.
“We had cases of rape reported, and we also found more than two dead bodies,” said Kgopotso.
The residents welcomed upcoming developments in the area, especially the mall, because they will no longer have to travel to places like Mamelodi and Silverton to do their shopping.
Chairperson of the community of Nellmapius, Teenage Maluleka, also welcomed the good news about the upcoming developments in the area.
Maluleka pleaded with Tshwane Metro to clear the veld urgently to protect the safety of both children going to school and people using the route to go to work.
Maluleka also pleaded with the public to stop dumping in the area.
Solomon Macheke from Nellmapius said the community members were happy to finally have their own police station and a shopping mall.
