Local beauty to represent SA in Indonesia

"I was determined to take the overall title this year. I worked extremely hard and I know what it means to wear this crown."

Local Pretoria beauty Lu-Juan Mzyk will represent South Africa on the international stage at the 10th annual Miss Grand finale in Indonesia later this year.

The 22-year-old was crowned Miss Grand South Africa recently.

Mzyk boasts over 200 titles.

She first entered the competition last year where she was the first runner-up.

“I didn’t think I would win because the competition was very tough and every competitor had a chance to walk away with the title.

“However, I was determined to take the overall title this year. I worked extremely hard and I know what it means to wear this crown,” she said.

Miss Grand, which is seen as one of top the four international competitions, wants to give a platform to “stop the war and violence” against women and children.

She undertook a project to represent leadership programmes among young girls to teach them not to be afraid to speak up.

Mzyk is currently studying fashion media as she has always been passionate about fashion and beauty.

“I have my own modelling school where I pave the way forward for young girls to be comfortable in their own skin and to be able to create the best image of themselves.”

Her love for the modelling industry started in school.

“Some highlights in my career is that I have been to Italy for modelling.

“It takes someone with a very thick skin to be in this industry,” she said.

“I am very passionate about creating awareness of violence towards the youth because we are not always educated when one feels helpless. The only way to get your message across is with a voice that people will hear.

“My message to women and children would be to never keep quiet. If you feel people don’t hear you make your voice louder so they understand how important situations are. Violence is never the answer; it doesn’t solve any problem, it just creates more problems,” Mzyk said.

The 10th annual Miss Grand will take place on October 25. The current title holder is Vietnam’s Nguyen Thúc Thuy Tiên.
