ANC to launch queer-only zonal region in Atteridgeville
The sub-community says that its aim is to tackle rampant discrimination against its community and fight for equal rights for all.
The ANC’s LGBTQIAP+ sub-committee is set to become the first zonal structure under the party led by queer-only members.
The official launch in Atteridgeville is scheduled for September 17 from 10:00-14:30 and follows up launches in Hammanskraal and Soshanguve.
The pro-queer sub-community is determined to provide platforms and representation for members of their marginalised community in areas throughout Tshwane.
The ANC’s LGBTQIAP+ sub-community was founded by pro-queer allies of the ANC, residents and various community organisations in 2019.
The sub-community said that Atteridgeville is but a single stop in a plan of strategic launches around the metro, the launch is scheduled to take place in central Pretoria.
The sub-community says that it wants to tackle rampant discrimination against its community and fight for equal rights for all.
Those interested in joining the sub-committee can contact them and register on the national desk for the LGBTQIAP+ formed in early 2020.
The ANCWL and the LGBTQIAP+ launched the national desk specially designed for them to give the marginalised members in their community the chance to bring their issues forward and change the political and social landscape.
After the launch in Atteridgeville, regional task team member Itumeleng Mombezi said the sub-committee plans to take the fight to the enemy, stating that in due course, marches will be carried out against alleged homophobic schools and organisations.
Mombezi did not disclose the names of these institutions, but told Rekord that they are located in the city of Tshwane and can expect a visit from them soon.
“Queer learners are being harassed, discriminated and mistreated at these institutions. We as the LGBTQ+ community say that it is enough. We are still mobilising our zonal structures but soon enough, we will demand answers from these places,” said Mombezi.
