Dentist association treats disabled patients to free oral care at Centurion day hospital
Patients with special needs were pampered by Dr Kearney Advanced Dentistry.
The SA dental association (Sada) has prioritised residents of Woodside sanctuary in Johannesburg and El Shalem in Centurion for help with dental care this Oral Health month.
Sada hosted its annual charity event at Centurion day hospital in Centurion to help these physically impaired residents with their oral hygiene.
Sada Pretoria branch president Dr William Kearney of Dr Kearney Advanced Dentistry, said the organisation annually during September, Oral Health month, hosted events like these to assist patients with special needs.
Kearney said the focus for this year was to help patients from the Woodside sanctuary and El Shalem.
He said these patients are not able to do their normal daily oral health routine themselves as they are severely impaired so they rely on the assistance of caretakers to help them with these tasks.
At the event, Megan Carvill of Dr Kearney Advanced Dentistry trained the caretakers on how to assist the patients with their oral hygiene.
She said the hospital made it possible for the dentistry to attend to these patients’ oral health under general anaesthetic.
A mother of one of the patients, Mrs Du Toit, thanked Sada and Dr. Kearney for the wonderful job they performed on her daughter.
“We would like to send our deepest appreciation and thanks to Dr Robyn Kearney and her team. Your kindness was overwhelming and the professionalism of you and your team was of the highest standard. We would also like to express our thanks to Centurion Day Clinic and all personnel. We will definitely recommend you.”
The hospital management also thanked Dr. Kearney and his team for the work they did at the hospital.
“We would like to thank Dr William Kearney, president of Sada Pretoria, and Dr Robyn Kearney, vice-president of the Young Dentist Council (YDC), for performing dental procedures on special needs children and adults.”
Woodside Sanctuary also thanked the two dentists on behalf of its residents that received dental care on the day.
“Woodside cannot begin to express our immense gratitude to Dr. Kearney and the team from Centurion day hospital for the incredible assistance provided to three of our profoundly intellectually disabled residents who have been having dental issues for some time. Your wonderful help in alleviating our angels dental problems is most gratefully appreciated by all at Woodside.”
The community also thanked the hospital for the kindness it showed in making its facility available for this event.
