TUT Soshanguve karateka prepares for trip overseas

The Tshwane University of Technology’s TUT directorate of sport and recreation hosted a send-off function for its Soshanguve campus karateka going to Poland.

Scelimpilo Buthelezi had qualified for the trip but needed financial assistance to go.

Now, next week he flies out to Poland for the 7th World Karate Championship to fulfill his dream of competing overseas.

Apart from the funding, the directorate also gave him the essentials for his trip.

According to the acting director of directorate Elijah Ncube, it was important for it to help Buthelezi achieve his dreams by giving him the necessary support he needed.

“We understand that every student has his dreams and career path. We don’t believe that there’s a small sporting code and we feel like the students must be treated the same and given the same opportunities,” he said.

He said the directorate needed to support him because he represented South Africa and TUT well in the last few tournaments before he got the opportunity to travel abroad.

“We know that small sporting codes are very expensive but if you have a student that is doing well, we must support them,” he said.

He added that the directorate must not allow the dreams of a young athlete to die because of funding.

Student representative council secretary Thabo Phakoago said seeing a young man live his dream to represent the institution and the country is great.

He added that Buthelezi’s resilience to push until he achieves his dreams would motivate other athletes to never give up on theirs.
