Traffic officer in Akasia arrested for bribery and fraud charges in court
License disks were later issued to the complainant but were found to be counterfeit when the complainant was stopped by the Tshwane metro police during normal daily operations.
A licensing officer at Akasia Licensing Department is scheduled to appear in court next month.
The officer was arrested last week on charges relating to bribery and fraud after the officer issued counterfeit licence disks.
Dikeledi Selowa, MMC for Roads and Transport said according to information received from the SAPS, the investigation is related to the licensing officer requesting licensing fees of a complainant to be paid into the official’s bank account to renew the licence disks for the complainant’s vehicles.
License disks were later issued to the complainant but were found to be counterfeit when the complainant was stopped by the Tshwane metro police during normal daily operations.
The suspect is now out on bail of R2 000 after spending a night in jail and appearing in court the following day.
The case is still under investigation, with the suspect’s next court appearance scheduled for November 23, 2022.
Additional investigations on other possible related cases are also under investigation but have not been concluded.
“I would like to condemn any fraudulent actions by any of our personnel as well as our customers and would like to applaud the work done by the SAPS in combating fraud and corruption at our licensing facility.
“The metro is already conducting an internal investigation against the said official and, based on the outcome of the investigation, we will institute disciplinary action,” she said.
Selowa acknowledged that corruption is among the challenges they are facing as a department.
“It is one of my priorities as part of the current coalition government in Tshwane to fight the scourge of corruption.”
