R80 a crime hotspot

Recently social media users raised concerns after a spate of attacks and robberies of pedestrians on the R80.

Tshwane police acting district commissioner, Brigadier Samuel Thine said it is alleged that suspects threaten their victims with either knives or firearms then rob them of their belongings.
“The victims are mugged either in the bushes or by the wall,” he said.
“The suspects also target motorists on the robots of the R80 off-ramp towards Brits Road at night hours.”
Recently Rekord reported that a man was killed in the area in August, by two unknown assailants.
Akasia police spokesperson Constable Lindiwe Mdluli said that the man was travelling with his three colleagues along the R80 when he asked that they pull over as he needed to relieve himself.
According to the female colleagues, two unknown men emerged from the bushes and started frisking him.
When one knocked on the car window, the driver sped away leaving the male colleague behind.
They then stopped at the nearest filling station to call the police and give them the location of where they left him.
Police received the call at 19:40 and rushed to the scene where they found the man dead with no visible injuries.
Emergency services were called to the scene.
The man was declared dead, and a case of murder was opened at the Akasia police station.
Thine said that police inquiries established that most crimes that allegedly occurred there were not reported to the police.
Thine vowed that police would not rest until the suspects are brought to book and urged community members to immediately report information on the robbers via www.crimeline.co.za or MySAPS app (downloadable to all smartphones and tablets) to the nearest police station or on 08600 10111.
“To report a crime is free and all the necessary documentation will be completed by a police official,” said Thine.
