Mams police slam mob justice after man beaten to death
A 32-year-old man in Mamelodi East was beaten to death by an angry mob on October 29.
Mamelodi police have strongly condemned a mob justice attack in which a 32-year-old man was beaten to death by an angry group of community members over the weekend.
Police spokesperson Constable Lethabo Mashiloane said they received complaints from residents of Mamelodi East ext. 4 at Marishane Street about a group of people assaulting a man early in the morning of October 29.
He said the police rushed to the scene and upon arrival found community members standing on the side of the road, with a man lying on the ground that was badly injured.
“The victim was immediately rushed to the hospital but died upon arrival at the hospital,” said Mashiloane.
It was alleged that the victim was assaulted by the community because they believed he was committing crimes in the area.
“The case of murder is being opened and the police have started with investigations.
“The search is on for those responsible for the murder,” said Mashiloane.
He said the police strongly condemned acts of vigilantism and discouraged the community from taking the law into their own hands.
Mashiloane encouraged community members to work with the police to fight crime in the community.
“We discourage in the strongest possible terms such action. It is unlawful to take the law into your own hands.”
He added the public should report any crimes at their nearest police station.
“We condemn mob justice. Your action will not be justified for your action. Let the law take its course.
“No one is above the law and no one has the right to beat or kill someone just because he or she committed a crime.”
Mashiloane advised the public to report any suspicious-looking persons to the police by dialling 08600 10111.
