Walk in large numbers this festive season, police say

Residents are warned not to carry lump sums of money.

Residents must be vigilant and trust their instincts this festive season, as those two things could keep them safe, the police have said.

Lyttelton police spokesperson Captain Dave Miller was making remarks ahead of the influx of Christmas shoppers expected to flood shopping centres.

“Try as far as possible not to advertise that you have something of value with you, try not to walk with your cellphone in clear view.

“Be as vigilant as possible, and trust your instincts when you feel something is out of place,” he said.

Miller advised pedestrians to walk in large groups as that would make it difficult for criminals to target them.

“The suspects operating in the area are usually on foot and will be one to two in number, they are usually armed with knives while firearms have also been reportedly used.

“Early mornings and late evenings tend to be the preferred time of attack,” Miller added.

The captain said criminals commonly targeted cellphones, laptops and wallets.

Recently Laudium SAPS spokesperson Simon Chokoe also warned that carrying a large amount of cash invited criminals.

“Communities are advised not to carry much money when going to drinking places. We also cautioned them from carrying weapons when they attend social gatherings.

“They must also try not to share drinks with strangers, avoid confrontation when under the influence of alcohol and not leave their drinks unattended,” Chokoe said.

Chokoe said police will continue with more visibility operations such as stop-and-searches around the area to ensure that communities are and feel safe.

He also sensitised residents about criminals pretending to be police officers at this time of year.
