Noweto councillors share highlights of 2022 and plans for 2023
Two ward councillors shared their highlights of the year and their New Year’s resolutions.
The year 2022 was a beautiful year for some parts of Noweto but difficult for some.
Some had challenges of service delivery such as water leakage and power outages.
In some areas, ward councillors enjoyed some success in 2022 and are looking forward to an even better 2023.
Two ward councillors shared their highlights for the year and New Year’s resolutions.

Ward 30 Councillor Violet Phalwane:
Challenges we are faced with as a ward are a lack of service delivery by the metro. We have high municipal bills and a series of sewer spillages and blockages around the ward, and the city has only two sewer jets for the entire region 1, which is Soshanguve, Mabopane, Winterveldt and Ga-Rankuwa.
Illegal dumping and potholes are a problem as well as streetlights and high mast lights that are not working. Another thing is unemployment, especially for young people and the high rate of crime.
The Ga-Rankuwa mall project is still ongoing and we hope to employ more local people next year.
Service delivery remains our biggest challenge and our plan for 2023 is job creation in the ward, scrapping of high bills, skills development and training institutions improving the quality education to our community.
My focus for 2023 will be the establishment of committees to assist with identifying challenges faced by communities.
I would like to see all existing projects completed, young people empowered with skills and employed.
Residents of ward 30, I would love to wish all of you a Merry Christmas and a prosperous new year. Enjoy with your families and friends. Please stay safe, healthy and alive. God bless you and let’s come back in 2023 and work together and hit the ground running.
To stakeholders of ward 30, thank you very much for working together and for your support. Let’s continue to build a better community in ward 30 and assist those in need, especially the homeless and indigent. May God protect you and your family towards 2023.

Ward 24 councillor Chris Masiya
Service delivery remains our biggest challenge. The rainy season makes matters worse on our roads… This was also a huge issue throughout 2022 because a couple of times learners and educators could not access schools due to the bad state of our roads.
Winterveldt is a waterlogged area, which adds to the erosion of our roads.
Eskom switching off feeders without notifying or consulting with the community leadership led to community protesting blackouts.
Electricity was and is still a big issue and it should still be the main focus for 2023 unless it can be resolved in the next few weeks, of which it’s unlikely.
Our coming into office has brought stability to a very hostile and fragile ward. We have managed to build positive relations with stakeholders in the ward especially community-driven NPOs and NGOs.
We focused on building solid relations with the Department of Social Development officials and they have been assisting in bringing in many community uplifting programmes, like the recent service blitz which was a huge success.
We will push for the formalisation of Winterveldt, the many challenges which we are experiencing as a community are as a result of privately owned land, and the City must prioritise this issue so that we may enjoy municipal services like other communities.
Ward 24 is agricultural holding so more intention must be focused on that and encouraging young people to consider the opportunities within the agricultural sector to address unemployment and food security.
We will also be focusing on improving our relationship with Eskom, so that it may legalise our power supply and offer a reliable service to its customers.
The social development facility in our ward must also be opened in the coming year, so that our people may be relieved of the burden of utilising double transport to access services by the social development department.
