Central police prevent 57-year-old man’s suicide attempt

The scene of the incident was at the corner of Pretorious and Sophie de Bruyn streets in Pretoria Central.

Pretoria Central police managed to prevent a 57-year-old man from committing suicide by jumping from the rooftop of a building in the CBD earlier this week.

Police and Tshwane emergency rescue services responded to the call of a man threatening to jump off the rooftop of a building on January 2 at the corner of Pretorious and Sophie de Bruyn streets.

“The man reportedly claimed that there are men who are trying to take his life, so he saw it befitting to end it on his own before they do,” said police spokesperson Constable Thabang Nkhumise.

Upon arrival at the scene, authorities began negotiating with him to come down safely from the roof to avoid any causalities and discuss the matter further.

Thanks to Detective Warrant Officer Moseki, the man agreed to come down the roof safely using a ladder.

“The man was left in the care of the Duty Officer. He is safe and further investigations will take place to assist him and to also seek counselling,” Nkhumise said.

Central SAPS thanked all those involved in the effort to save his life and residents are encouraged to come forward for assistance to the authorities if they ever feel that their life is in danger.

Residents in similar predicaments can call the SAPS emergency number at 10111 or 0860010111 or the suicide helpline at 0800 567567.
