Local NGO revamps shelter for women and children

The shelter will be easily accessible as it is situated in the centre of the city.

Local NGO Kitso Lesedi Community Development is looking forward to opening its revamped shelter in Central Pretoria this March.

Located on 471 Belvedere Street in Arcadia, the Kitso Lesedi Shelter for Women and Women with Children aims to provide support to the more vulnerable members of society.

“The shelter will be easily accessible as it is situated within the centre of the city,” said Kitso Lesedi founder and CEO Maki Tselapedi.

The renovation project, which started in early December 2022, has seen upgrades being made to the roof, floor tiles, windows and doors, paint inside and outside the house, bathrooms and ceiling.

“We still need financial support, linen, stoves, clothing for women and children from 0 to 10 years, dignity packs (toiletries), etc,” Tselapedi continued.

Beneficiaries are faced with issues such as a lack of legal documentation, addiction, rejection, high rates of unemployment, coming from broken homes, poverty, and a lack of accommodation and sanitation among others.

The work is expected to be completed before the end of March 2023.

It forms part of one of the NGO’s regular awareness campaigns and outreach efforts.

Kitso Lesedi says that it aims to bring about change and growth to the city this year by helping its homeless beneficiaries with the numerous programs they offer.

“Women need to stand for themselves, be independent and self-empowered, stop depending on men especially financially and they need to stop protecting the perpetrators. They should learn to speak out and report everything,” Tselapedi concluded.
