Did you know you have to apply to put up advertising?

Moot residents recently removed hundreds of unauthorised and illegal unsightly posters.

Moot residents associated with Die Moot Projek community interest group recently removed hundreds of posters and signboards, they claimed were illegal and unsightly.

Organisers encouraged residents to remove posters and signs that were not legal or report them.

Erecting advertising boards, posters and signs in Tshwane requires approval from the metro and needs to be considered in relation to the regulations set out by the bylaws.

According to the City of Tshwane bylaws, any sign that is erected, distributed or displayed on City-owned property without the permission of the City or in contravention of the Outdoor Advertising By-law may, without notice, be removed and destroyed by the City.

This can be done at the cost of the person responsible for displayed, caused or allowed such sign to be displayed, distributed or erected.

Some of the bylaws for signs, posters and other advertising may not:

– Be attached to any traffic sign or signal

– Be placed on traffic islands or power masts, trees, fencing, electrical substations or any similar structure

– Be erected without the municipality’s approval

– Distract drivers in a way as to make driving unsafe

– Be illuminated to cause discomfort

– Be detrimental to the environment

– Display content that is objectionable, indecent, offensive or suggestive of indecency, prejudice or public morals

The municipality may remove and dispose of any unauthorised signage and is not required to compensate any person for the removal thereof.

Offences of the public advertising bylaws can carry a R60 000 fine or six months imprisonment.

Any illegal advertising can be reported to outdooradvertisingcomplaints@tshwane.gov.za and should include the location, description, and pictures if possible.
