Centurion councillor embarks on potholes fixing

The cost of fixing a pothole is estimated at R2 000 to R3 000.

A local councillor in his capacity as constituency chair for Centurion together with a team of volunteers have embarked on fixing of potholes in the area.

Prajay Ramjee told Rekord that he and his team had successfully fixed five potholes before the campaign was interrupted by rain.

“I need to lead by example to inspire branch chairs for the 12 wards of Centurion to replicate what we’ve done in ward 61,” he said.

Ramjee said they filled potholes on Emerald Street in Heuweloord and 6th Avenue in Laudium.

He, however, said he could not take credit alone as he was assisted by members of the community and his colleague Councillor Mjekana Mjekana.

Centurion resident Shona Ledwaba said it was breathtaking to witness councillors taking initiative and really serving their people.

“Sometimes it’s not what you say but what you do that can inspire others. We are inspired by the councillors’ dedication to keep up the good work. South Africa needs more of your kind,” said Ledwaba.

Heuweloord resident Elliot Simons said he was stunned by Ramjee’s initiative, adding that such was foreign to residents used to self-serving leaders who did not care about people’s needs.

“I can’t believe what I am seeing, a councillor taking his time and money making sure that the community was well treated, especially serving a ward that doesn’t belong to you. We actually need more like him in this country, I promise you next time when they embark on a similar project I am going to volunteer my services as well,” Simons said.

Potholes have given citizens countrywide especially recently, with every town struggling to fill them due to a lack of skills and resources. The SA national road agency (Sanral) recently estimated there were more than 25 million potholes on the country’s roads and the cost of repaired would be between R2 000 and R3 000 a square metre.

The national Transport Department recently launched Operation Vala Zonke to try and deal with the potholes but is losing the battle dismally.
