GP education MEC to open new secondary school in Pta

Department also put measures in place to deal with overcrowding.

As part of the Gauteng Department of Education’s readiness for the 2023 academic year, it has provided emergency water to 67 schools and mobile sanitation units to 20.

The department said it has also allocated funds for the construction of additional classrooms.

“We have transferred funds to 297 schools to build additional 878 classrooms. The 297 schools are already building and four new schools are scheduled to open in 2023; three are secondary schools and one primary,” it said in a statement.

MEC Matome Chiloane is expected to host the official opening of the Mapenane secondary school on January 11 as part of the Back to School Campaign.

Chiloane will be accompanied by his colleagues, who will be on an oversight visit to monitor the overall readiness for schools to commence teaching on time.

The inland schools reopen on Wednesday and coastal ones will begin their academic year on January 18.

The majority of parents raised concerns over the issue of learner placements as some of their children have not been placed in schools.

Many complained about their children not being placed in their schools of choice or too far from their homes.

The department opened the online admission window for late 2023 learner applications in December to afford parents who applied late a second chance.

Late applications for grades 1 and 8 remain open until January 31.

The department said only schools with available space would open for late applications.

It further said parents could hand-deliver any document they were unable to upload during the online application to the school from Wednesday, January 11 to 31.

Meanwhile, the national Department of Basic Education said the 2022 matric results would be announced on January 19.
